Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer is a fictional reindeer with a shiny/glowing (like a lightbulb) red nose. He is popularly known as "Santa's Ninth Reindeer" and, when depicted, leads the reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. The luminosity of his nose is so great that it illuminates the team's path through inclement winter weather.
Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward.
May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, decided to adapt the story of Rudolph into a song. Marks (1909–1985), was a radio producer and wrote several popular Christmas songs.
In 1950, the song was recorded by Bing Crosby. His version reached number 6 on Billboard magazine's Best Selling Children's Records chart and number 14 on Billboard's pop singles chart that year.
