The solo project of Staten Island singer/songwriter Paul Schalda, Paul & the Tall Trees offers an appealing mix of warm soul, rustic Americana, and lightly psychedelic rock. With nearly two decades as a working musician under his belt before launching the project, he made his Paul & the Tall Trees debut in 2016 with Our Love in the Light.
Schalda spent over a decade diligently playing everything from hardcore to straight-ahead rock before he settled into a more acoustic-based setting as Pablo in 2005. With help from his musical father and brother, he released a pair of well-received folk-rock LPs before shelving the project in 2009. After several years of touring as soul man Charles Bradley's guitarist, Schalda decided it was time to once again pursue his own voice. Under the name Paul & the Tall Trees, he signed on with Brooklyn label Big Crown Records and recorded his debut LP, Our Love in the Light, which arrived in 2016.
In the meantime, Schalda joined his father William Schalda, Sr. and brothers Will and Carmine in forming the doo wop-influenced group the Sha La Das. They released their first album, Love in the Wind, on Daptone in 2018. Paul & the Tall Trees returned a year later with its Big Crown follow-up, So Long.
