Indie-folk artist Upile Mkoka performs under the moniker Weathered, his latest self-titled EP was produced with old friend Josiah Birrell of GOVS. Tracking took place between the staircase in his house on the Gold Coast, University studio rooms and Upile's rumpus room with many emails in the middle. This was roughly a 5 month process as Upile made several trips down to record in the midst of both of their busy schedules. ‘Coast’ features harmonies by a friend of Upile by the name of ‘Harmony Rewald’ ironically. The EP was also mixed by Josiah Birrell and mastered by William Bowden at King Willy Sound (Gotye, Tim Finn + The Middle East). “We actually nearly didn’t record this song. I had only recently written it and the verse melody and lyrics were completely different; I was quite unsure about it all. I showed my producer regardless and he saw something fresh about it and wanted to include it in the EP. It was only a matter of days after that conversation until the lyrics and different chords dropped and that’s when it became a lot more open and personal than I’d expected. It stems from a deeper part of me than I've previously revealed or known, but I think that's a good thing.” Coast is an intimate performance delivered with elegancy from start to finish. Emotive in all forms, this is an incredibly raw and honest song with unconcealed lyrics retelling different stories. The track features intricately plucked acoustic rhythms accompanied by subtle percussion that drives the song to a complete different realm.
