Last summer I came across Canadian songstress a k u a while randomly patrolling the blogosphere and ended up catching a live set back in August, because I was intrigued by her oddball R&B that puts her somewhere between Solange and Grimes. And now she’s returned with her best song yet, “One’s Company”.
“One’s Company” pairs a k u a’s delicate-yet-rhythmic vocals with somewhat sparse, percussive production set to a creepy video full of cemeteries, funerals, and even a morgue – with the soul singer playing mortician. Yes, it may be creepy, but somehow it just works.
Keep your eyes out for more from a k u a as she’s sure to have a top-notch year after churning out more tracks like this one. -- unrecorded.mu
