ANIMAL FEELINGS is New York-based artist Oli Chang’s latest musical experiment. Highly collaborative in spirit, the album evokes a mad-capped, improvisational dance party with a set list that ranges from the melodic-driven European disco classics of Todd Terje to the seductive rock and soul mash up of Hall & Oates. This is music you want to move to: emotionally resonant interludes and aggressive bass drops are paired with twisted vocal and electronic accents that will invariably induce dance floor euphoria. As a gifted lyricist and producer attuned to the zeitgeist, Chang’s ANIMAL FEELINGS deftly switches gears, going from sprawling ambient songs to dark but fun electro pop gems.
The project’s irresistible first single “Fire” intertwines pop-bliss with harder techno sounds to create a unique blend of indie-dance pop. Fire’s music video, directed by Adam France, mirrors the song’s indomitable message: incredible choreography, mischievous animation and cutting-edge graphics coalesce, recalling the idiosyncratic brilliance of French photographer and Grace Jones collaborator Jean-Paul Goude.
Chang discusses the video process by saying, "Shooting this video was so fun. All I told Adam France (the director) was to make it like the track "dark but fun." I love letting geniuses do their thing without getting in the way of their vision. When it works it's the perfect collaborative process in the world. We found the awesome dancer Kai Pai through my friend Johnny Fascinator and took two days to shoot it. One of the coolest things about NYC is it's such a melting pot of incredible talent. This video wouldn't have been possible without the amazing creative team behind it.
