Description

Equally as iconic as Black Flag's hardcore-defining tunes is their artwork, supplied by Raymond Pettibon (aka guitarist Greg Ginn's brother Raymond). Just roll up the sleeves of half the crowd at any given punk gig, and you're bound to find a tattoo or two of the band's visually arresting black bars logo. The Museum of Contemporary Art is now saluting Pettibon's often dark and disturbing run of album covers, posters and more for the band in the inaugural episode of a new web series called The Art of Punk.

The 20-minute documentary features interviews with original Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris, bassist Chuck Dukowski and later vocalist Henry Rollins, among others, about the impact of Pettibon's stark visual landscapes. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea even discusses the artist's oeuvre from a bathroom lined with a collection of his artwork.

"Something's going on here and it's something intense," Flea said. "And those flyers made me feel like there's something going on that I don't know about, and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is, but I want to know… It was revolutionary. People were freaking out."
