From 1978

"Substitute" is a song by Willie H. Wilson, covered in 1978 by the South African band Clout.

Recorded first by The Righteous Brothers and released in 1975 on their album The Sons of Mrs. Righteous, and the song was also covered by Gloria Gaynor. Sylvie Vartan recorded a version in French ("Adieu la Solitude") while Paola del Medico recorded a German version ("Ich bin kein Hampelmann").

In 1978, the song became a big hit for the band Clout, reaching #2 in the UK charts in August and achieving sales of 500,000 copies. It fared even better in the rest of Europe where it reached #1 in Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Ireland as well as Australia and New Zealand. This version was produced by Grahame Beggs.
