Dagmar’s sound is raw, challenging, a vulnerable vocal-driven exposition of Medieval harmonies and uncrumpled diaries. ??The name Dagmar, a Scandinavian word meaning "lightness of day" and the name of many women of power throughout European history, was chosen for its harsh and masculine-sounding quality while ?being defined by positivity and light. Says Dagmar, "Our music has a lot of dissonance and power, but there is beauty within the rough edges."
Anchored in their prairie homeland of Iowa, Dagmar is a new music project with history: Gemma Cohen (vocals, bass) and Miranda Mallard (vocals, keyboard, guitar) are Dagmar’s core, from a small town where most people never really meet, but just know each other. "We have memories of playing together as kids as young as age 5 or 6. When we were in college, we were at a mutual friend's birthday party and found ourselves in a secluded corner learning the classical Lakme Flower Duet. From there, we began learning every song we could get our hands on that had harmonies?,?" says Cohen.

Nine years later, including 8 years of performing together in other bands, the pair has released their debut album afterlight. ? ?Cohen and Mallard round the band out with golden boys Dana T and Justin LeDuc. Dana T adds sugar, spice, and lots of things nice with his guitar and array of pedals. LeDuc tackles complex time signatures of songs written in 11/4 and beyond with a smile on his face, drumming like he belongs to Mensa. The band released afterlight on CD and digital formats on June 6th. It was recorded and mixed at Flat Black Studios in Iowa City and mastered at Saff Mastering in Chicago. ??

"Tumbleweed" was written when Mallard was in the midst of a tumultuous divorce. She was ending an abusive relationship and found herself having to step up and fight for her own protection and rights as well as those of her toddler son. The song became the warrior anthem that empowered Mallard through all the stages, legally and otherwise, of separation with the father of her child. The video is director Alana Waksman's ?vision of Mallard's battle and transformation, depicted beautifully by dancer Jenna Riegel, a tumbleweed through an empty house.
