We’ll always cherish storytellers, whether they be chatty grandparents, authors, or rappers. Philly-raised MC Dayne Jordan looks to be the latter. No song of his more so conveys this hope than his recent single, “In Progress,” which details his come-up. By the end of the first minute, and before the rhymes even begin, we’re introduced to his family. His mom held him down with her job as a radiologist, and his dad ranked high in his pantheon of heroes. As soon as the nostalgic, violin-laden beat from the legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jordan’s mentor, starts, the rapper tells all.
The Cristopher Schafer-directed visual does little to distract from Dayne’s narrative. Jordan’s memories are projected around him - on walls, in windows as he blankly stares outside from his bus seat, on the sides of passing subways. His words take us through each chapter, even including his search for a graphic designer to help professionalize his image. It’s rare to see an emerging talent who can piece together a chronological story to this effect.
Memoirs of Dayne Jordan drops as a free download on July 21. The project, which follows Jordan from childhood through fatherhood, is entirely produced by Jazzy Jeff. -- P&P
