Marsha Balaeva is a UK artist and director of "Joe With the Jam".
The video for "Joe with the Jam" is populated with figures plucked from the imagistic rush of lyrics in the song: e.g., "Jane with the saw" [...] "Shane with the sauce". These figures are represented figuratively and symbolically: e.g., the black gloom-shadow of the "four crooked cops". It is a depiction of a city trying to untie its own Gordian Knot.
After hearing the song, Marsha sequestered herself in her production spot, and over the last few months produced 2700 individual hand drawn frames for the video.
A few weeks back, Carey Mercer announced the latest Frog Eyes album, Pickpocket’s Locket and shared lead single “Joe With The Jam.” Now, that track has gotten a video treatment, which takes Mercer’s imaginative lyrics and translates them haphazardly into artistic representations. Animated by Marsha Baleava, it takes phrases from the song like “Jane with the saw” and “Shane with the sauce” and brings those characters to life against a washed out backdrop. -- Stereogum
