Special Thanks to Mr and Mrs Hutton.
Meeting by chance in a South London bar, Joshua Idehen (vocals, songwriting) and Andy Highmore (production, keys) immediately bonded over a mutual appreciation of bands like Beach House, Grizzly Bear and Soul II Soul. They decided to jam together came up with the first recorded track titled , “I Can Be Your Light”. This sweet ballad was the first step of their debut EP I Can’t Figure You Out which was released in June and saw the formation of HUGH with a four-piece line-up.
Their sound ranges from an electronic R&B infused style with jazzy elements with the track “Charlie”, to more introspective slow-ballad music like the single “I Can’t Figure You Out” and “I Can Be Your Light” and “Not Fair Too Far” which sports pinches of hip hop. Their sound feels so unique and fresh but I have to throw it out there: HUGH seem to bring two greater qualities from two contemporary artists that I admire greatly, somehow blending the inventiveness of Blood Orange and the distinction of The xx. These artists are also very careful about their visual presentation, as this band is, from their personal style to the images as the video for “I Can’t Figure You Out” shows with it’s elegant form. -- unrecorded.mu
