James Vincent McMorrow - Red Dust

Post Tropical // January 2014.

When we first encountered “Red Dust” last week, it seemed a perfect complement to the coming winter.

Filled with lush vocal layers and meditative piano, James Vincent McMorrow seemed like the second coming of Bon Iver, an electronic hippy who was probably eco-friendly finding happiness through an innocent and altogether joyous exploration of music’s digital age.

Wrong. The Irishman’s video for “Red Dust” counters McMorrow’s vocal flexibility with a bleak depiction of love on the outs. It is thoroughly sad.

A woman returns home to her trailer to find an admirer waiting. He’s in a bad place, and it only gets worse when she fights him off and locks herself in the trailer to take stock of her surroundings: a hunting rifle, men’s suits, and gasping fish all follow, painting a portrait that’s as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.

It’s the second video McMorrow has had directed by Aoife McArdle, and McMorrow revealed there’s another collaboration between the two on the way. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears peeled-er.
