Last night's (May 1) inaugural iHeartRadio Music Awards brought out a number of performers, from Arcade Fire to Pharrell, but perhaps none were as personal as Kendrick Lamar's West Coast rap-saluting cover of 2Pac and Dr. Dre's "California Love."

Ahead of the live performance, a pre-taped interview with Lamar has the rapper explaining how he and his dad stumbled onto the video shoot for the mid-'90s classic, back when little Kendrick was only eight years old. After praising the cut on film, the awards show jumps back to real-time and finds an onstage Kendrick putting his own spin on the song. After wrapping his tribute, he keeps on rockin' with a song of his own, "m.A.A.d. City."

Regardless of whether or not you know how to party, and even if you're not currently in the city of Compton, you can see the all-around awesome medley up above.
