Taken from the 2007 collection of previously unreleased material, New Moon, “Angel In The Snow” is an overlooked gem in Elliott Smith’s catalog. While not a traditional holiday ode, Laura Stevenson saw the inherent beauty in the tender love song, dropping by The A.V. Club office to offer her own delicate take on it.
Though Stevenson is accustomed to penning heartbreakers of her own, she also shares a familial link to one of the holiday season’s most iconic tracks: “Little Drummer Boy.” As she notes in the interview, her grandfather was part of the songwriting team behind the snare-laden Christmas tune, which precipitates her mother’s yearly request for a “Little Drummer Girl” update.
Laura Stevenson is the latest musician of repute to stop by The A.V. Club’s Chicago studio and cover a famous song for the A.V. Undercover series. The Long Island rocker and Bomb The Music Industry! alum took on “Angel In The Snow” from Elliott Smith’s posthumous 2007 album New Moon. As with last week’s edition, the studio’s halls are decked with boughs of holly and other holiday decorations. Watch Stevenson’s tender performance above. -- Stereogum
