With one of the most impressive music videos of the past year already under his belt in “Martyrs,” rising Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins has been marching forward with his bar set quite high ever since. The 23-year-old, having prepped the release of his upcoming mixtape, The Water[s], since the lead single dropped in December, recently announced his signing to Cinematic Music Group, and his buzz is now at an all-time high.

Today, Mick serves up another outstanding visual for the latest cut off the project called “Jazz.” The GoodBoy Media-directed clip sets up a compelling narrative, following a pair of bicycle-wielding young boys through a water-deprived city on a blazing summer afternoon. Early in the video, they successfully steal two coolers from a group of lamentably entrepreneurial men in efforts to help quench the thirst of the neighborhood’s less fortunate—one of which is played by Mick—in a commendable, Robin Hood-like effort. Just as the men are about to catch up to the thieves after chasing them down for several blocks, a miraculously timed rainstorm commences, thus ending the city’s drought and the mens’ devious pursuit to make a quick buck off the peoples’ unfortunate troubles.

Lyrically, Mick is as sharp as ever here, delivering enlightened, gravelly raps over the smooth-riding OnGaud production and summing up his general stance as an artist with a statement hook: “Talking all that jazz might get you popped, but I ain’t gonna stop don’t a-s-k, until I’m in a white droptop with a smile on my face and a hand in the air like JFK.”

It’s a powerful video and one of Mick’s best singles to date, a promising sign that The Water[s], which arrives August 12, could very well catapult him to stardom. Watch above, and stay tuned for more.
