I've been following the sensational Ray Blk for quite some time on the sly. Her Havisham EP from earlier this year - a Charles Dickens-inspired collection which details the story of a girl who falls in love, only to have her heart broken - signalled exciting things to come from the south-east London resident. There's something unapologetically British about Ray; in fact, it's more like "unapologetically modern London". When her latest track '50/50' appeared on SoundCloud, I was immediately drawn to the original artwork. Seated in the middle of a group of friends at the local hair salon, one of which is swigging from a carton of Ribena (another quintessentially British trait), I couldn't help but smile.

Shot in her hometown of Catford, the accompanying clip to '50/50' echoes the artwork and sees Ray and her girls rolling through south London to the hair salon because, as she said herself to i-D Magazine, "women are stronger together because there is power in numbers." The Aston Rudi-produced track talks of the reality of dating a drug dealer who simply cannot commit; a story which she says is relatable to many girls from her area. It's a unique creation reminiscent of early Jill Scott meets TLC full of gusto and girl power. Ray recently revealed on Twitter that she had quit her graduate job in order to pursue her musical dreams but if her output continues on this path (a new EP is expected early next year) she's got nothing to worry about. Witness a star being born.
