It is with purpose that beauty precedes beast, and for Alyssa Coco and Matt Merritt, the Rochester, New York-based duo known as Roses & Revolutions, it is no coincidence that a flower comes before the fury.

“Behind the scenes we both do a lot of writing, but Roses & Revolutions is definitely a female-fronted band,” Merritt says. “The live show is all about Alyssa; I play guitar but she has the crowd in the palm of her hand.”

The Upstate indie-pop outfit has been building their sound together as a pair since 2009, having first met while playing in the Rochester scene. As members of a bigger multi-instrumental band, Coco and Merritt recognized in each other a kindred spirit—despite not being perfectly simpatico in terms of musical background and influences—and decided to start writing together as a two-piece.

“One day Matt asked me if I was interested in jamming, to see if we connected,”Coco says. “A couple rehearsals later we realized we had something; when we got in a room and played a song, even a cover, with his guitar and my piano together, it was fun—a different kind of connection.”

While Merritt had grown up a student of music who took years of lessons, learned theory, and studied jazz performance and guitar technique, Coco taught herself by feel, learning to play piano by practicing on a family organ in her basement and teaching herself to sing by following along with singer-songwriters like Vanessa Carlton and, naturally, the Titanic soundtrack.

They formed Roses & Revolutions in late 2014, seizing upon the feminine/masculine and delicate/aggressive dynamics of their group for their name (not to mention the fact that Coco’s middle name is both a namesake to the band as well as the heroine in her favorite ’90s movie). Spending nearly every second of their days together lent itself nicely to their creative output, and throughout the next two years they would continue to hone their sound, often while hiking or picnicking in the gorgeous natural surroundings of Upstate New York.
