Australian singer/songwriter Ry Cuming -- better known as Ry X -- found commercial success with his sparse, atmospheric single "Berlin," which was used on a European advertising campaign for Sony TVs in 2013. Born in the coastal town of Angourie, New South Wales, Cuming grew up listening to the likes of Pearl Jam and Jeff Buckley, and their influence can be heard in his distinct, ethereal vocal delivery. In 2010 he relocated to L.A. to pursue his music career and was eventually rewarded when he was noticed by Jive Records, which released his self-titled debut as Ry Cuming later that year. He went on to tour with pop/rock heavyweights Maroon 5 and enjoyed moderate success, while he also worked with pop star Sara Bareilles on album track "Always Remember Me." Following a quiet period, Cuming re-emerged in 2013 with an EP entitled Berlin under the moniker Ry X after signing to Stockholm-based label Dumont Dumont. The reverb-heavy guitar sound found on his EP is a step away from the acoustic strums and rockier edge of his previous work and evoked comparisons to Fleet Foxes and José Gonzalez. The lead single, "Berlin," charted in the U.K. Top 40 following the aforementioned European Sony advertising campaign. After touring extensively as the vocalist for electronic act The Acid, Ry X settled into his studio to work on his debut solo-album Dawn, which saw release in 2016.
