Pop music may be over-thrown but that doesn’t mean it’s extinct; it just has to rely on the lesser-known tag of its actual genre. Montreal trio SEOUL are the perfect example of this and through their foundation, based upon experiences in South Korea’s capitol, are looking to craft lost pop moments using their take on ambient-pop. SEOUL see pop as being, “less like a genre and more like a type of beautiful and rare moment of convergence… of sounds, of ideas, of taste, of context.”
SEOUL is Dexter, Nigel and Julian, and the meaning of their chosen moniker runs deeper than a simple capital city inspiration. The trio claim that its most obvious association is with the sprawling metropolis itself; how a lot of their music “locates itself in an urban context and deals with that feeling of liquefying into one’s surroundings, and a city really promotes this sort of dissolving.” Along with this, the trio see their name as a representation of both its homophones’ meanings; “sole” focusing on a loneliness that comes hand-in-hand with living in a major city, and “soul” looking at the individual’s spirit amidst everything – a confirmation of a struggle. -- LB4YB
