Siskiyou - "Jesus in the 70's" Ink drawings by April-Lee Johnson
"Jesus in the 70's" from 'Nervous' Released 20 January 2015 on Constellation
Canadian West Coast experimental folk unit Siskiyou released their latest LP Nervous earlier this year, and the band are keeping the momentum behind the record rolling with a new clip for "Jesus in the 70's".
The record was recorded at Vancouver's Afterlife Studio, following frontman Colin Huebert's trip to Dawson, YK, for a songwriter's residency. An inner ear condition began to affect him at this time, leading to "severe anxiety and an unwelcome interiority, engendered by hyperacusis and a house that felt utterly haunted."
The internal distress and unsettling eeriness is palpable on "Jesus in the 70's" - a dark, brooding number propelled by a simple, steady bass line and breathy, whispered vocals until the song builds into a brash, crashing crescendo. The accompanying visuals feature beautifully intricate black-and white animations from April-Lee Johnson that morph with the music.
