T. Rex in Concert - March 18, 1972, 8:30pm Show

This concert at Wembley Empire Pool is one of two T. Rex played there on March 18, 1972 with 10,000 fans at each. T. Rex had just had a great year in 1971 with several successful singles and the release of the Electric Warrior album. Most of the songs for The Slider were written and would soon be recorded. Ringo Starr approached Marc Bolan with the idea of making a movie about the band for Apple Films. The movie would be Born To Boogie and the majority of it would consist of footage from this date. The 8:30pm show quickly sold out and a 5:30pm matinee was added which sold out as well. Ringo himself was one of the five cameramen who filmed these two shows.

This is arguably T. Rex at their absolute peak. These are the only two full T. Rex concerts ever recorded. Both shows had the same set list. The 5:30pm show has a great acoustic set and the camera work may be slightly better. It served as great warm-up for the excellent 8:30pm show (which was the show that was used for Born To Boogie). The footage has been painstakingly restored from 16mm and T. Rex producer Tony Visconti, who recorded the original concert, restored and remixed sound.

T. Rex was one of the greatest bands of the era and in 1972 they were at the peak of their fame. They had a massive following and T. Rextasy almost had the feel of Beatlemania at the time. Marc Bolan was a charismatic, witty and charming frontman and he is definitely the father of glam rock. He refracted the values of 1950's rock 'n' roll, added lots of glitter and kept the idea of the three minute pop single alive in the early 1970's when certain elements in rock music were becoming bloated and pretentious. As a result, T. Rex has remained an important influence over the years on hard rock, punk, new wave, and alternative rock.
