Teenage Mothers are from Melbourne, Australia. Their songs are about broken love, injustice and kicking against the pricks.
Teenage Mothers’s debut album is produced and mixed by Jim Sclavunos, esteemed drummer from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Grinderman. Jim’s also produced records for The Horrors and The Jim Jones Revue. Proudly independent, Teenage Mothers self-funded the recordings. In Australia, the album will be released through Teenage Mothers’ own label ‘Shane McGowan’s Dental Records’ (distributed by Fuse).
The album was recorded at Birdland Studios in Melbourne, where the late Rowland S. Howard (one of Teenage Mothers’ favourite artists) made his classic solo records.
Teenage Mothers’ lead singer, JK, left school at 16 to be a pro skateboarder. Then he quit the Nike team and taught himself to read. Now he’s a political activist (and still skating hard). Last year, he spent two weeks sleeping at the Occupy Melbourne protest. Until he joined Teenage Mothers, JK had never sung onstage.
The band’s guitarist (and sometimes lead vocalist) is Raphael Brous. His provocative novel ‘I Am Max Lamm’ was recently published in Australia through UQP / Penguin Books. In 2013, the novel will be published in the UK through Corsair.
