Shot in Berlin over two freezing days in January, The KVB‘s stark video for “In Deep” captures the glacial, widescreen beauty of a song whose melancholy vocal is married to a motorik beat, pierced by blasts of icy guitar.
Says Nicholas Wood, one half of the UK duo: “There’s definitely a romantic undercurrent: it’s about longing to be with someone and getting lost in a world that you create together.” Adds Bristol-based director John Minton, who provides Portishead with their live visuals and has shot videos for Savages: “The song is about longing (so) we wanted make intimate images with a cold tone which rolled with the tune.”
Blending minimal electronica with psychedelic shoegaze guitars shrouded in reverb, The KVB began life in Southampton, on England’s south coast, as Wood’s bedroom project before the arrival of his partner and collaborator Kat Day. A student of fine art at Goldsmiths, Day provides all the visual elements of The KVB, from album artwork to visual projections for their live performances. Since 2010, the prolific duo have released a series of limited cassette, download and vinyl EPs and three albums, and moved to Berlin in 2014.
“In Deep” is a delicious taste of their fourth album, Of Desire, recorded at Geoff (Portishead) Barrow’s Bristol studio, to be released on his label Invada Records on March 11. -- unrecorded.mu
