Things might be spiraling out of control, but don’t look away. If you did, you’d miss a killer video. Trapdoor Social’s “First Light” is a beautifully apocalyptic journey into the unknown, a frenzied battle for the future of our self-destructing metropolis.

With impressively angular animation courtesy of Thomas Lacey, the visual style of “First Light” is reminiscent of the beautiful film Persepolis, but with an added layer of abstraction and an unsettling sense of looming collapse, like it’s been thrown into a blender with lost, grainy footage of WWII era bombers.

But when the bombs come crashing down, rather than burn, the dead cityscape is reborn in abstract waves of light and color. By the time “First Light” reaches its last frame, despair gives way to a future full of possibility.

It is, then, a perfect encapsulation of the emotion and engagement behind Trapdoor Social’s music, inspired by the challenge of a changing climate, and drawing on influences from such bands as Death Cab For Cutie and Third Eye Blind, and you can easily hear them on the radio next to other emerging bands like Atlas Genius and Bastille.

It is a potent combo, and amidst the resplendent beauty of the video’s finale, it’s easy to get lost in their brilliance.
