"Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? Who taught you to hate the color of your skin to such extent that you bleach to get like the white man? Who taught you to hate the shape of your nose and the shape of your lips?" Malcom X asks as an excerpt from his famous speech begins V V Brown's new political video for 'Sacrifice.' She's dressed in whiteface, wearing a blonde wig and blue contact lenses. She sits smoking while clips project slave ships, KKK members and Sandra Bland behind her. It's an incredibly powerful political piece.
To accompany the video, V V penned an essay for the Guardian. "I have often been in a room in which everyone can't help but notice the colour of my skin," she wrote. "It strangely becomes an issue. People see my culture as intriguing -- almost a commodity. In some circles, conversation turns to hip-hop or something 'slightly ethnic', to try and cover up their own discomfort and ignorance. You can tell they wonder how they should act in the presence of a black person."
