Wendy Bevan is a British musician known for her surreal and theatrical approach to performance. In developing a unique cinematic world and style of her own Wendy’s work spans an array of media including film, visual imagery and immersive, experiential artworks. Her history as a visual artist and photographer leads her to maintain a multidisciplinary approach to her work; she believes in creating a universal language and balance in the crossover of these disciplines.
Bevan has exhibited and performed as a solo musician, throughout the UK and Europe. She has appeared at music and live arts festivals such as SPILL Festival of Performance, Latitude, and Secret Garden Party. Bevan has also performed at venues such as the ICA, and London’s Hackney Empire as a solo artist, and in recent years with her band Temper Temper working extensively as a performer, with theatre companies such a Punchdrunk; in their London shows, and their cult New York hit, Sleep No More. Wendy is a singer and violinist and has collaborated and worked with music producers including Paul Simm (Neneh Cherry/Amy Winehouse) Howie B (Bjork/Tricky). Her project Saints Don’t Sleep, developed with producer Richard Frenneaux (Red Light Company/Laura Welsh) launched in 2015 at the IMPOSSIBLE SPACE in Paris. Wendy’s songs have since been synched on several feature film soundtracks, including her song ‘Hanging on the Wire’ (2015) on the recent Reg Traviss brit gangster movie ‘Anti-Social’, and the Pacitti Company feature film, On Land Guard Point scored by Michael Nyman in 2012, saw her song ‘Starless Night’ (Co-Written by David McAlmont) used within its main score.
This year her EP Sweet Dedication will be released, featuring two tracks from Wendy’s fourth coming debut album, Rose and Thorn. Produced by Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague, Rose and Thorn will be released on Kwaidan Records and !K7 Records in Springtime 2016. In the wake of heros like Suicide and Kas Product the minimal synth orientated project, mainly recorded on a Jupiter 8 and vintage drum machines features live strings arranged, and performed by the Balanescu Quartet. The much anticipated album is said to ‘take possession of your soul without you noticing’.
For the last decade, Bevan has also regularly contributed as a photographer to leading, international fashion publications including LOVE, i-D, POP magazine, 10, Harpers Bazaar and Vogue Italia. Her signature Polaroid photographic work explores the identity of women, the iconic female image, and the characterisation of the femme fatale; often using fashion as costume. She has taken portraits of female icons such Debbie Harry, and Tilda Swinton. In August 2015, she was invited by LOVE magazine to create a Summer diary online, Bevan used this platform to show a series of portraits of friends she collected throughout the summer of 2015, recording her life throughout her travels to LA, Paris, Milan and London.
Her recent solo art show Slow Light opened in 2014 at London’s COB gallery, and has since been shown at the SOHO Review Gallery, London. The show was an exploration of the self portrait, captured through polaroid film, triple exposures, light and music. The exhibit included photographic prints, projections, and a music installation created with violin sounds. Wendy is a visionary, and her love for theatricality is ever present in whatever she pursues. The World of Wendy Bevan, will continue to mesmerise, inspire and bewilder audiences.
